THE SUBTERRANEAN TEAM

Mitchel has been submerged in hair education for the vast majority of his 25+ year career.
Raised in the Los Angeles skateboarding/ punk/ death rock- counter culture movements of the eighties; Mitchel first found identity as a rebel musician. Soon enough the pressures of getting a “normal” job caused him to focus on one of the more colorful aspects of music . . .HAIR. After all, the punk culture of DIY hairstyling was standard.
Mitchel religiously devoted 18 years to advanced hair education in both styling and barbering. This saw him teach to audiences globally, cut for trend setting collections, work behind the scenes in film & television, cut & style many musicians and celebrities, as well as working in the tents at coveted New York Fashion Week with designers Rag & Bone, Chris Benz, Prabal Gurung, The Blondes and Mara Hoffman amongst numerous others. In 2013 he provided the cutwork to a NAHA finalist collection.
After 20 years of being involved with the corporate side of professional hairdressing, Mitchel could no longer ignore the need to live up to his true rebel roots, flip corporate rock off and fulfill a lifelong dream of owning a groundbreaking space inspired by music, fashion and art.
In 2019, Subterranean Hair was manifested into a universal modern luxury hair space. A salon and barbershop that welcomes all walks of life and caters to their unique identity and lifestyle.

Vanessa has been a dedicated member of the Subterranean Hair team for three years. A few years ago, she made the pivotal decision to pursue a career that would challenge her while also exploring her creativity leading her to enroll in cosmetology school at Toni&Guy in Costa Mesa.
She began her journey at Subterranean Hair as Mitchel's apprentice, where she acquired valuable insights into the fundamental craft system that is upheld here. Most recently, she joined the Subterranean Hair leadership team as salon manager to build her skillset beyond the chair.
Whether you desire a subtle change or a bold new look, Vanessa's primary goal is to provide you with a hairstyle or hair color that genuinely reflects your individuality.
When she's not doing hair, you can find her at the bookstore. As an avid reader and former English major before attending cosmetology school, she has a never-ending TBR list and would love to swap book recommendations during your time in her chair.
Amy
Ashikyan
SENIOR COLOR / CUT ARTIST | $120 / HR

Growing up in Los Angeles, Amy spent most of her childhood going to hair shows and in salons, where she watched her mom, also a hairstylist, pour her heart and soul into her craft. With over 18 years of experience, Amy has worked in salons, owned her own salon studio, worked with the Arizona Opera as a wig and makeup artist, and worked with dancers across many stages in the country.
After living in Los Angeles for 24 years, Amy switched gears and moved to Arizona for a change of pace and devoted the majority of her time and energy into raising her kids. While motherhood never ends, neither does her passion for being a hairstylist. Now back in Los Angeles, Amy is excited about building a new clientele in the San Pedro area. Her primary goal as a hairstylist is to make every client who sits in her chair, fall in love with themselves all over again!
Outside of the beauty world (and being a mom), Amy is an avid reader, a lover of music who plays the guitar and piano, loves all things outdoors and collecting stamps in her passport, thrifting/antiquing, and can most often be found at the beach.
